A Brief History of Tuttle Christian Church

Several people who desired to be called simply "Christians" and who held the New Testament as their rule of Faith and Practice, were living in Tuttle prior to 1906.  These people met together for Bible School and Communion, and occasionally had preaching.  They met in the school, the Odd Fellows Hall, and later in a store building on Main Street.  In about 1906, R. E. Rosentine, an evangelist, held a meeting in a tent in Tuttle, and under his leadership the church was organized and began to grow.  The first elders of the church were Henry Breese and J.C. Clayton; Deacons were G. L. Hamrick, I. A. Campbell and C.D. Van Dyck and Mrs. T. L. Ewing was Treasure.

In 1907 the first church building was built, but a year later was badly damaged by a windstorm.  Mr. Luther Hale supervised the reconstruction, and within a short time the building was in good repair once again.

The second pastor was T. M. Colville, who published a paper at Mustang.  Brother Colville had been a Methodist, but accepted the principles of the Christians Church and was immersed by Brother J. H. O. Smith.  Soon after his conversion he began to preach at the church here.

The church has since had a number of preachers, including: George Thomas, Mr. Atene, Mr. Harp, A. B. Carpenter, G. Lyle Smith, Ed Rinehart, Fred Sharon, F. W. Sprague, H. G. Dawson, F. Grove Alford, R. M. Lemmox, E. E. Watson, W. F. Bruce, P. E. Johnson, T. H. Jones, E. C. Horton Don Stram, Jerry Balke, Gilbert Forrest, Gene Segroves, Wayne Goodman, Carl Polsley, Daniel G. Wilson, George Williams, Derrick Bohn, and presently Aaron Levering who came in June, 2001.

Our present building was built under the ministry of Gene Segroves at a cost of $42,000 and was dedicated under the ministry of Wayne Goodman.  Since that time during the ministry of Carl Polsley, we have moved the parsonage to its present location.

In 1979 Jerry Fraley came to serve as our first Youth Minister, and was with us for two years.  Mike O'Neal was hired in October 1981, when Jerry left to continue his education.

The Church has continued to grow serving Christ and the Tuttle community.
